You will work alongside experienced OB-GYN specialists, midwives, and nurses, assisting in prenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, as well as in the management of gynecological conditions and surgical procedures.
With limited access to reproductive healthcare in many developing countries, women’s health remains a critical global health issue. The Surgical Elective Abroad with Elective Abroad provides medical students and aspiring surgeons with invaluable hands-on training in general, trauma, orthopedic, and specialized surgeries. Throughout your rotation, you will develop essential diagnostic, procedural, and perioperative management skills while working in low-resource surgical units.
This elective is designed to prepare participants for real-world surgical challenges, emphasizing preoperative risk assessment, intraoperative techniques, and postoperative care. The program encourages proactive learning, clinical decision-making, and hands-on surgical practice under expert supervision.
🔹 Key Learning Areas & Hands-On Experience
1️⃣ Surgical Anatomy & Pre-Surgical Evaluation

Understand basic anatomical structures related to common surgical cases and their neurovascular relationships.

Learn pre-surgical risk assessment, including Goldman’s criteria, ASA classification, and coagulopathies.

Obtain relevant surgical histories, conduct physical examinations, and formulate differential diagnoses.

Interpret preoperative imaging, including X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds, to assist in surgical planning.
2️⃣ Perioperative & Anesthesia Management

Gain an appreciation of anesthesia principles, including sedation, intubation, and spinal anesthesia techniques.

Participate in the management of acute trauma cases using up-to-date ABCD protocols.

Assist in the management of blunt and penetrating trauma, including gunshot wounds, stab injuries, and burns.

Gain experience in chest tube insertion, wound debridement, and incision & drainage procedures.

Observe and assist in orthopedic trauma surgeries, including external fixation, K-wiring, and plating/screwing techniques.
5️⃣ Postoperative & Rehabilitation Care

Learn fluid and electrolyte management in post-surgical patients.

Participate in colostomy care, wound management, and infection control.

Assist in the rehabilitation and follow-up of orthopedic and neurosurgical patients.

During your Surgical Elective Abroad, you will gain hands-on experience in managing a diverse range of surgical conditions that are often more advanced than those seen in high-resource settings. Patients in low-resource hospitals frequently present with late-stage diseases and trauma, requiring urgent intervention and creative surgical solutions due to limited resources.
Participants will be exposed to a wide variety of cases across general surgery, trauma surgery, orthopedic surgery, and oncologic surgery, giving them a comprehensive understanding of global surgical challenges.

ading to peritonitis and septic complications.
✔️ Intestinal Obstruction – Often caused by adhesions, hernias, or tumors, requiring emergency laparotomies.
✔️ Obstructive Jaundice – Frequently due to cholelithiasis (gallstones) or pancreatic cancer, necessitating cholecystectomies or bile duct drainage procedures.
