Midwifery Electives Abroad
Tailored Placements Across Asia & Africa
A Midwifery Elective Abroad with Elective Abroad gives you the unique opportunity to be an essential part of the labor and delivery team, gaining real-world clinical experience in low-resource hospitals and maternity units across Africa and Asia. With over 90% of maternal deaths occurring in developing countries, maternal healthcare is a critical global health challenge—one that you will actively contribute to addressing.

Common Conditions Encountered in the Midwifery Elective Abroad
During your Midwifery Elective Abroad, you will gain hands-on experience managing a wide range of maternal and neonatal conditions in low-resource settings. Many of these conditions are less common or more advanced than those seen in high-resource countries due to limited access to prenatal care, late hospital presentations, and a lack of medical interventions. You will work alongside experienced midwives, nurses, and obstetricians, learning how to adapt and provide critical care with minimal resources.
🔹 High-Risk Pregnancies & Antenatal Conditions
✔️ Preeclampsia & Eclampsia – Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy are major causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. You will assist in:
-
Monitoring blood pressure, proteinuria, and fetal well-being.
-
Recognizing warning signs of severe preeclampsia and eclampsia (seizures, headaches, visual disturbances).
-
Assisting in emergency management, including magnesium sulfate administration and delivery planning.
✔️ Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) – Poorly controlled blood sugar can lead to macrosomia (large babies), birth complications, and neonatal hypoglycemia. You will:
-
Monitor blood glucose levels and provide dietary guidance to expectant mothers.
-
Assist in fetal growth monitoring and complication prevention.
✔️ Anemia in Pregnancy – A major concern in developing countries due to poor nutrition and recurrent infections. You will:
-
Educate mothers on nutrition and iron supplementation.
-
Assist in detecting and treating severe anemia, which can lead to preterm labor and postpartum hemorrhage.
✔️ Placental Complications – You will see cases of:
-
Placenta previa (placenta covering the cervix), leading to bleeding and the need for C-section.
-
Placental abruption, a life-threatening condition requiring immediate intervention.
✔️ Teenage Pregnancies – High adolescent pregnancy rates lead to complications like obstructed labor, preterm births, and increased maternal mortality. You will:
-
Provide prenatal education on maternal health, contraception, and safe delivery options.
-
Work with young mothers facing social and economic challenges.
🔹 Labor & Delivery Complications
✔️ Obstructed & Prolonged Labor – A leading cause of maternal and neonatal mortality. You will:
-
Assist in monitoring labor progression using partographs.

Recognize signs of fetal distress and assist in decision-making for interventions (C-section or assisted delivery).
✔️ Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) – The #1 cause of maternal death worldwide. You will:
-
Assist in administering uterotonic medications (oxytocin) to prevent hemorrhage.
-
Learn to recognize excessive bleeding and provide emergency interventions.

-
Learn to assist in emergency maneuvers (McRoberts maneuver, suprapubic pressure) to free the baby safely.
✔️ Breech & Malpresentation Births – Babies presenting feet-first (breech) or sideways (transverse lie) require specialized management. You will:
-
Observe decision-making for vaginal breech delivery vs. emergency C-section.
-
Assist in external cephalic versions (ECVs) to turn breech babies before labor.
✔️ Vacuum-Assisted & Forceps Deliveries – In low-resource settings, assisted deliveries are common due to exhaustion, fetal distress, or prolonged labor. You will:
-
Assist in preparing for vacuum/forceps-assisted deliveries.
-
Learn about indications, risks, and post-delivery care for mothers and newborns.
🔹 Postpartum Conditions & Neonatal Care
✔️ Postpartum Infections (Puerperal Sepsis) – Often caused by unsanitary delivery conditions or prolonged labor. You will:
