Healthcare Internships in
Arusha

Arusha is a vibrant city in northern Tanzania, known as the gateway to some of Africa’s most famous national parks, including Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Nestled at the foot of Mount Meru, Arusha offers a stunning natural landscape, a rich cultural heritage, and a welcoming atmosphere. With a mix of urban life and breathtaking wilderness, it is the perfect location for students looking to gain medical experience while exploring Tanzania’s unique beauty. Whether you’re visiting bustling markets, taking in the views of Mount Kilimanjaro, or going on a weekend safari, Arusha provides an unforgettable experience.
Mount Meru Regional Referral Hospital is one of the largest public hospitals in northern Tanzania, serving as a key healthcare provider for Arusha and the surrounding regions. With over 450 beds, the hospital offers services in general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency care, and more. It also functions as a teaching hospital, training medical students and healthcare professionals.
As a healthcare intern at Mount Meru, you will work alongside doctors and nurses in a dynamic environment, gaining exposure to a range of medical conditions and procedures. Due to limited resources, the hospital relies heavily on clinical diagnostics and hands-on medical practice, making it an excellent learning environment for aspiring healthcare professionals.

Health Care Overview
Since gaining independence in 1961, Tanzania has made significant progress in healthcare, working to improve services for its population of over 60 million people, many of whom live in rural areas. The country has expanded its healthcare infrastructure, improved child survival rates, and increased life expectancy from around 45 years to 66 years. However, Tanzania faces ongoing challenges, including a high burden of infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.
In recent years, Tanzania has also seen a rise in non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and cancer, adding further strain to the healthcare system. Limited access to healthcare services in rural areas, financial constraints, and resource shortages remain significant obstacles. Despite these challenges, the government continues to implement reforms aimed at improving healthcare accessibility and quality, with efforts focused on expanding universal health coverage, strengthening primary healthcare, and improving maternal and child health services.
