Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN) Electives Abroad
Tailored Placements Across Asia & Africa
A OB-GYN Elective Abroad with Elective Abroad offers medical students an invaluable opportunity to gain real-world clinical experience in low-resource hospitals and maternity units across Africa and Asia. You will work alongside experienced OB-GYN specialists, midwives, and nurses, assisting in prenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, as well as in the management of gynecological conditions and surgical procedures.
With limited access to reproductive healthcare in many developing countries, women’s health remains a critical global health issue. This program is designed to enhance your clinical skills, deepen your understanding of maternal and reproductive health, and prepare you for a career in OB-GYN by exposing you to conditions and cases that you may not encounter in high-resource settings.

Our OB-GYN Elective Abroad provides a comprehensive, hands-on experience in a variety of clinical settings, focusing on both maternal health and gynecological conditions.

Common Conditions Encountered in the OB-GYN Elective Abroad
During your OB-GYN Elective Abroad, you will gain hands-on experience managing a variety of maternal and gynecological conditions that contribute to high morbidity and mortality rates in low-resource settings. Many of these conditions are rarely seen in their advanced stages in high-resource countries, giving you a unique opportunity to learn about late-stage presentations, emergency interventions, and innovative approaches to patient care in resource-limited environments.
In many developing countries, the "Big Five" leading causes of maternal mortality include:
✔️ Hemorrhage (Postpartum & Antepartum) – Uncontrolled bleeding before or after childbirth is the leading cause of maternal death.
✔️ Infection & Sepsis – Postpartum and post-surgical infections are common due to delayed care, poor sanitation, and limited antibiotic access.
✔️ Hypertensive Disorders (Preeclampsia & Eclampsia) – Untreated high blood pressure leads to seizures, stroke, and multi-organ failure.
✔️ Unsafe Abortion Complications – Due to limited access to family planning services and restrictive laws, many women suffer from severe bleeding, infections, and organ damage following unsafe procedures.
✔️ Obstructed Labor & Related Complications – A major cause of maternal and fetal deaths, often requiring emergency C-sections or assisted delivery.
🔹 Maternal Health & Pregnancy-Related Conditions
Postpartum & Antepartum Hemorrhage (PPH & APH)
-
Leading cause of maternal death worldwide, often due to uterine atony, retained placenta, or ruptured uterus.
-
Participants will assist in rapid response management, including oxytocin administration, uterine massage, and emergency surgical intervention.
Sepsis & Infection
-
Common causes include prolonged labor, unsanitary delivery conditions, and untreated postpartum infections.
-
Participants will assist in identifying signs of infection, ensuring early treatment with IV antibiotics and wound care.
Preeclampsia & Eclampsia
-
Characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, and organ dysfunction, this life-threatening condition can progress to seizures and stroke.
-
Participants will monitor blood pressure, assist in seizure management, and help with emergency delivery decisions.
Obstructed Labor & Fetal Distress
-
Common due to cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD), adolescent pregnancies, and prolonged labor.
-
Participants will monitor fetal distress, assist in vacuum-assisted deliveries, and observe emergency C-sections.
Unsafe Abortion & Its Complications
-
A major public health issue in low-resource settings, leading to severe infections, hemorrhage, and organ perforation.
-
Participants will observe post-abortion care, manage sepsis cases, and learn about contraceptive counseling.
Ectopic Pregnancy
-
A leading cause of maternal mortality in early pregnancy, often diagnosed late due to lack of ultrasound availability.
-
Participants will assist in recognizing symptoms, managing cases with methotrexate treatment or emergency surgery.
🔹 Gynecological Conditions & Reproductive Health
Cervical, Ovarian & Endometrial Cancer
-
Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignancies in developing countries due to low HPV vaccination rates and lack of screening programs.
-
Participants will assist in Pap smears, colposcopy, and biopsies, gaining insight into cancer prevention and early detection strategies.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
-
A leading cause of infertility due to untreated gonorrhea, chlamydia, and other infections.
-
Participants will observe diagnosis and management, including IV antibiotics and surgical interventions for complications like tubo-ovarian abscesses.
Uterine Fibroids & Ovarian Cysts
-
These benign growths often present with severe pain, abnormal bleeding, and fertility issues.
-
Participants will assist in patient evaluation, ultrasound diagnostics, and observe surgical procedures like myomectomy and cystectomy.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) & HIV/AIDS
-
Many patients present with late-stage syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV-related gynecological conditions.
-
Participants will observe screening, patient counseling, and treatment protocols for managing HIV-positive pregnancies and STI complications.
